Oh those oh-so-famous words. Yet nobody ever does, until the last few weeks when the deadlines start creeping closer, and panic strikes.
Personally I blame the Finnish elementary school mentality: do your homework once a day, only one day at a time.

It’s always the same. By writing it down like this, I hope to remember the way I felt these days and learn from it. No amount of “the exams are closer than you think” from the guidebooks or professors cuts past our natural tendency to procrastinate and only worry about today.
I actually think it goes way beyond Finnish elementary school, to a more evolutionary psychology idea: The principles of minimum effort and immediate profit, for lack of better terms. Why would you sacrifice any of your potential pleasure today to decrease the strain on tomorrow, a day that may never dawn on you? What if you end up toiling away, hoping that one day far in the uncertain future, you will achieve pleasure from the fruits of your labour? Will the pleasure be worth more than the combined benefits now, even with stress and worry existing alongside?
No, the brain tells us. Tomorrow is there to worry about doing things. Or tomorrow may be the end of the world. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts.
