Oh Hi There

Seeing the new students arrive on campus is pretty interesting. I was just as clueless a year ago as they are now. What a difference a year makes! I move from building to building, room to room, with speed and precision compared to the ambling, confused new arrivals.

It’s really pronounced at work, too. Sitting behind more experienced colleagues and watching them work reveals a pattern – a shy and cautious new student asking a question pertaining to their user accounts or using their own laptop to access the school network. It’s almost like we as support staff have to coax them closer, saying “Don’t worry, we won’t bite you.”

The Americans are still loud (and conspicuous). The whole thing seems more organized this year, but it may just be me being more used to the quirks of the LSE admin process. I have urges to just pop my head into wondering conversations and guide people along but I don’t think that’s really my place. It does worry me a bit though that some people graduating from the LSE may leave London pretty much just as clueless about the city around them as they were when they arrived.
